The past two days have been beneficial yet increasingly demanding. It has helped me reaffirm my abilities to deal with conflict but also confirm that I would not choose to be a high school administrator or teacher. I’m baffled as to whether it is a maturity issue or due to a change in scenery with no parents or principals; but what are the coaches doing?
This weekend, we are providing housing for a camp of 6 basketball teams. Check ins were a breeze and we thought we were smooth sailing from there. However, last night and tonight changed our outlook. Random screaming and pounding erupted from the 2nd and 3rd floor as the noise level hiked in the building, the elevator is now making all kinds of weird squelches, and the halls now smell similar to a locker room.
I didn’t expect anything better from this group of young students but when it began coming from the adult chaperones, I was in for a surprise. I was wondering if the teenagers behaved like this at home but then it came to wondering if the adults behaved like this with their wife and children. Last night, I ran into an adult writing vulgar phrases on a whiteboard and today someone else argued with me about cleaning up food and water that littered our front desk.
A spoilsport is someone who spoils others’ pleasure. Some of the campers are making the most of it and I see them having a great time. There are plenty of respectable teenagers in this group but the few that are wreaking havoc are ruining it for the others. The group is viewed as a whole and their reputation is becoming infamous over the past 2 years.
I enjoy my job with housing because it keeps you on your feet and you never no what to expect. It is similar to that of a police officers shift. No call is ever routine.
I’m unsure what tonight will bring but my duty phone is ringing: a lockout or a ball through a window? Your guess is as good as mine.
